Go Green (Sarsabz o Pursukoon Karachi)

The Go Green initiative, a project of the National Forum for Environment & Health, is one of its flagship projects that was officially launched in 2014 with the name Sarsabz o Pursakoon Karachi. The program, which began with the encouragement of the Commissioner Karachi Office and the Government of Sindh, had a motivational transforming it into a community, NGO, industry, and corporate organizations movement. Essentially, the Go Green programme endeavors to return the greenery that Karachi has lost, to lessen the effects of climate change, and to establish healthy urban spaces that are compatible with the environment and the people.

This campaign is not a one-time event but a bi-annual citywide initiative, which is in harmony with the plantation seasons in order to make the survival and growth rates reach the maximum.

The Vision Behind Go Green

Environmental Restoration

Reviving tree cover to fight urban heat, pollution, and climate change.

Community Empowerment

Motivating the people, students, and businesses to engage actively in the development of sustainable neighborhoods.

Peaceful and Green Karachi

Creating a setting where green areas are the source not only of environmental stability but also of social welfare and standard of living.

Success Stories

  1. Communities living near industrial zones where plantations were arranged reported that they could breathe better than before since the trees absorbed harmful gases.
  2. Participating program schools launched ‘student-led eco-clubs’, going beyond the initial Go Green initiative, and instilling environmental consciousness in the youth.
  3. The corporate participants use the fact that they were part of Go Green to proudly declare one of their CSR accomplishments, thus setting a trend in their industries that others follow.

Our Achievements

Go Green has been coming up with quantifiable outcomes and is still growing with every plantation season since the very beginning. The essential milestones reached are:

  • More than 385,000 trees have been planted in various locations of Karachi and its surrounding areas.
  • Eighty percent success of the sapling growth was achieved, mainly due to the continuous follow-up and monitoring.
  • Regular plantation drives are held during rainy and winter seasons, which are the most suitable for the growth of the plants; thus, higher success rates are ensured.
  • Participation by schools, universities, NGOs, industrial groups, and corporate sponsors has been so great that Go Green is now considered a community-driven initiative.

Such achievements highlight the Go Green project’s commitment to not just urban tree planting, a major challenge in one of the world’s most populous cities, but also to ensuring that these trees survive.

How the Campaign Works

  • Strategic Partnerships – We cooperate with the Commissioner’s office in Karachi, the Sindh Government departments, NGOs, and corporate organizations to share resources and extend reach.
  • Community Engagement – By schools, universities, and neighborhood associations participating actively, youth and residents can be involved practically in plantation drives, playing the roles of hands-on members.
  • Corporate Collaboration – Business enterprises incorporate plantation events as part of their CSR activities, contributing money, manpower, and logistical support.
  • Post-Plantation Care – In contrast to short-lived drives, Go Green is more inclined towards aftercare with follow-up visits, supervision, and facilitation for the growth of the saplings to their full maturity.

Impact on Communities

The campaign has turned into a major source of benefits that have spread, which are not limited to tree planting only:

  • Environmental Impact – Among other things, the initiative is expected to improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and help lower the temperature of the urban areas that have been subjected to excessive heating.
  • Health Benefits – The cleaner air and the shaded areas created by trees are some of the contributing factors to public health improvement.
  • Community Engagement – Plantation drives have been a major source of volunteers, who, in turn, have become a strong social fabric and have been responsible for the emergence of stronger community ties and civic pride.
  • Urban Transformation – Today, schools, offices, and neighborhoods are benefiting from the green areas, which, in addition to adding beauty and livability to Karachi’s urban environment, are returning the city to its erstwhile self with the coming of nature and trees.

Partnership Opportunities

Go Green’s rise to stardom has always been about the power of teamwork. NFEH is still welcoming new partners to come on board and deepen this groundbreaking initiative. The opportunities are:

  • Corporate Sponsors – Play the social responsibility card by partnering with relevant eco-friendly projects that not only make a real difference but also help you get the deserved green leader awards.
  • Educational Institutions – Give students a real-life environmental mission and turn sustainability into the school’s spirit.
  • Government Bodies & NGOs – Collaborate with us to bring this initiative to other urban and rural areas.

Upcoming Campaigns

After several years of achievements, NFEH is broadening the range of Go Green with more than just one new subject:

  • Urban Forest Development – The planting of large trees in urban areas, where the air quality and the number of living organisms will increase through the natural habitat.
  • Fruit-Bearing Trees Program – Planting fruit trees in neighborhoods as a source of food and ecological wellness.
  • Climate Awareness Campaigns – Grafting public education in urban forestry and sustainable practices with plantation drives.

In this way, these projects are indeed the starting point of the Go Green campaign to extend its variety and sustain its positive effect in the future.
